From the US to Provence: intimate wedding in le Rayol Canadel captured by Sylvia Calmet, French destination wedding photographer

From the US to Provence: Aaron & Emily’s intimate wedding

There are some stories you never forget. Encounters that begin long before the wedding day, sometimes thousands of miles away, and that come to fruition in Provence. Aaron and Emily’s intimate wedding is clearly one of those stories. From the USA to Provence, and more specifically from NYC to Provence: this is the story of Emily & Aaron.

Sylvia Calmet, your French destination wedding photographer in Provence :

I am Sylvia Calmet, your French destination wedding photographer based in the South of France and available throughout Europe. I work with couples from all over the world, very often from the United States, who dream of an intimate, elegant, and deeply human wedding in Provence or elsewhere on the continent.

My approach goes far beyond photography. I love to build genuine relationships with my couples, understand their stories and energy, and create a seamless experience even from a distance. For me, being a destination photographer is as much about storytelling as it is about reassuring, guiding, and connecting.

That’s exactly how Aaron and Emily’s story began online, then in NYC and after that in Provence. Ready to read it? Let’s go!

An encounter in New York, far from the clichés :

When Aaron and Emily contacted me, I immediately told them about how I work: I am a French destination wedding photographer based in the South of France, and I travel all over Europe (and beyond) to tell sincere stories. At that moment, I also shared a very personal detail with them: in December 2024, I was in New York on a family trip.

From this simple conversation, a slightly crazy idea was born, one that I love: doing their engagement shoot in NYC. As you know: engagement sessions are always included and if I can do it where you live : I am more than happy about that ! It’s another way to tell your story !

New York City for their engagement session :

For two hours, we explored the neighborhood where Emily works. No Central Park, no famous panoramic views. Just their New York, authentic, raw, alive. Streets she knows by heart, an urban atmosphere, almost cinematic. Exactly what I love: telling a true story, far from clichés.

This shoot laid the foundation for our relationship. We had coffee in the café they love so much. They learned to trust me, and I learned to understand their energy, their way of being together. A precious bond, especially when planning a destination wedding from the US to Provence.

An intimate wedding in Le Rayol Canadel, Provence, in an exceptional villa :

A few months later, we headed to the South of France. Aaron and Emily chose a private villa that I know very well, as it is where Grace and Daniel got married. A place bathed in light, perfect for an intimate wedding in Provence.

This is exactly the kind of wedding that excites me: few guests, lots of emotion, time to enjoy every moment without pressure. Intimate weddings allow for a real connection, between the bride and groom, their loved ones, and also with me as the photographer.

Being 11, and being essential :

There were 11 of them in total, surrounded only by their closest family members on both sides. No crowds, no frills. Just the people who really matter, those who are part of their story and who will continue to write it after this day.

This choice was deeply important to Aaron and Emily. They wanted a sincere, human wedding, centered on connections, glances, shared emotions. And that’s exactly what makes sense to me, too.

Photographing a very small wedding means being fully present, attentive to every detail, every interaction. It means telling a story with precision and gentleness, without forcing anything. When a couple chooses intimacy, I invest myself even more. These moments are precious, and they deserve my full attention.

The black dress code: chic and timeless

One detail stood out from the very beginning: the black dress code. And what a choice.

Black immediately brings incredible elegance. It stands the test of time, flatters figures, and gives photos incredible visual consistency. Combined with the softness of Provence, this contrast creates an aesthetic that is modern, chic, and deeply timeless.

If you dream of an elegant, minimalist wedding that will never go out of style, the black dress code is, in my opinion, an absolutely perfect choice.

Being a destination wedding photographer is much more than just traveling :

Being a destination wedding photographer isn’t just about flying on planes. It’s about accompanying international couples, often American, who choose France and Provence to say “I do.”

On Aaron and Emily’s wedding day, I also provided real logistical support. Coordinating with other vendors, helping with communication in French, managing the timing … All these things allowed the bride and groom to let go and enjoy themselves to the fullest.

Their review perfectly sums up what I try to bring to every couple:

“She went above and beyond her duties as a photographer and helped coordinate with our other vendors which was super helpful to us as English speakers.”

From the US to Provence, a story to tell

From the heart of New York to a Provençal villa, Aaron and Emily’s story is proof that love knows no boundaries. Whether you come from the United States or elsewhere, Provence offers an incredible setting for an intimate, elegant, and deeply human destination wedding.

If you too dream of a wedding in the South of France, a wedding on a human scale and sincere images, I would be honored to tell your story wherever you are in the world.
