Anna and Ben: A US-to-Provence Love Story, From Gordes to La Devèze

I was in Italy when I received Anna and Ben’s first email. 48 hours away with my own love and I opened it. Everything was already there: who they were, how they saw their story, what mattered to them. I didn’t need a call or a questionnaire to know. I remember thinking, right there in Italy, that this was going to be a beautiful story to be part of. I couldn’t wait !

Some couples I meet once, for one perfect afternoon, and then I never see them again. Anna and Ben are not that kind of couple. Our story together started months before their wedding day with this email. Then we met on a hillside in Gordes at sunrise. It ended, five months later, under the stars in the courtyard of La Devèze, in the Hérault.

My name is Sylvia Calmet. I am a French Destination Wedding Photographer in Provence working with couples across the South of France, the French Riviera, Paris and Europe. Welcome to Anna and Ben’s wedding in the South of France.

Where It Started: An Engagement Session in Gordes

Anna and Ben came to France on a trip, both American, both quietly, unmistakably in love, and both allergic to anything that felt staged. We planned their engagement session the way I plan for couples who want the moment to feel like them: at first light, before the village woke up, on the hillside overlooking Gordes.

They wore white and cream, quiet tones, chosen on purpose so that nothing would compete with the golden light or the stone village behind them. No color, no distraction, just two people, a view that looks unreal even in person. It’s the kind of early-morning stillness you can’t fake.

After sunrise, we moved into the village itself: a coffee with a view over the rooftops, a slow wander through Gordes’ narrow streets, the light shifting from pink to gold as the town came alive around them. It wasn’t a shoot with a rigid list of poses. It was an early morning we spent together, and by the end of it, Anna and Ben weren’t just clients, they were two people I genuinely couldn’t wait to photograph again.

That’s the real value of an engagement session for destination couples: by the time the wedding day arrives, there’s no awkwardness in front of the camera, no “getting to know you” small talk. We already know each other. We already trust each other. All that’s left is to show up and let the day happen.

” We couldn’t be happier with our experience working with Sylvia for our wedding! From our very first video call she was friendly and personable. Coming to France from the United States I was worried about finding vendors, especially a photographer, and I am so glad I found Sylvia!”

The Wedding: 16 People, Every Detail Considered

Anna and Ben came back to France in September, this time for the wedding itself at La Devèze, in Quissac, in the Hérault. If Gordes was about vast landscapes and quiet grandeur, this day was the opposite in scale and just as powerful in feeling: sixteen people. Anna, Ben, and only their closest.

What struck me most, working with them again, was how intentional everything was. Nothing was left to chance, and nothing was overdone. The bridal bouquet echoed the ceremony’s color palette, which in turn echoed the dresses worn by the women that day. It was pastel, joyful, coordinated without feeling matchy. It’s the kind of styling that takes real thought, and it showed in every frame: elegant, refined, genuinely happy.

We covered the whole day on-site at the domaine where the whole family was staying. Getting-ready moments for both Anna and Ben, details, flatlays, the ceremony, cocktail hour, and finally dinner under the stars in the courtyard. Sixteen guests around one table, string lights above, a September sky doing its part, it doesn’t get much more intimate than that.

What a destination wedding in the South of France, or anywhere in Europe, can be :

Anna and Ben’s wedding is, for me, the clearest example of what a destination wedding in the South of France can be when a couple plans it together, thoughtfully, from the other side of the Atlantic. An engagement session isn’t just extra photos: it’s the first chapter. It’s how a couple and their photographer build the trust that makes a sixteen-person wedding, months later, feel completely unguarded in front of the camera.

This is something I always come back to when I think about what makes a destination wedding different: everyone sleeps on-site, everyone lingers, everyone gets to actually be in the place, some of them discovering France for the very first time. Guests don’t come just for a wedding. They come for a trip, short or long, with or without the couple at every hour of it. It’s a few days that are theirs to keep, not just a ceremony they attend and leave.

Whether you’re dreaming of a destination wedding in Provence, like this couple’s sunrise session in Gordes, or planning something further afield in the South of France, an engagement session is where I’d suggest starting not for the photos alone, but for everything that comes after them.

If this kind of intimate storytelling speaks to you, you might also love this one in The Château de Forbin or that one in the Château de Robernier.
